NYCU Miaoli Campus Industry-Academia Collaboration Reaches New Heights
Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-Chin Supports Accelerator and Radiation Medicine Talent Development
A delegation from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) and Heron Neutron Medical Corp., a company specializing in Accelerator-Based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (AB-BNCT), visited Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-Chin on May 25. The meeting focused on industry-academia collaboration at the future Miaoli campus, the promotion of experimental education programs, and the cultivation of radiation medicine professionals. Both parties reached a strong consensus on future collaboration initiatives.
To accelerate the establishment of NYCU’s Miaoli Campus, NYCU President Chi-Hung Lin, Vice President Yung-Fu Chen, Director of General Affairs Shih-Chang Huang, President Jui-Jung Chen, and the university team presented the latest plans for the Miaoli Campus Industry-Academia Innovation Base. President Lin stated that the university council would discuss the campus development proposal on May 27 before submitting it to the Ministry of Education in June.
As part of the plan, the Industry-Academia Innovation Base will collaborate with Heron Neutron Medical Corp. to establish an “Accelerator Industry-Academia Incubation Center.” The center will integrate accelerator research and development resources with radiation medicine expertise, creating a diverse and professionally competitive learning environment for students.
Wen-Chen Wang, Vice President of Heron Neutron Medical Corp., noted that Accelerator-Based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (AB-BNCT) is one of the next-generation precision cancer treatment technologies. Through collaboration with NYCU, Heron aims to establish an “International Accelerator and Radiation Medicine Strategic Talent Development Center” in Miaoli. The center will serve as a training hub for future nuclear medicine professionals while incorporating resources from the semiconductor, smart healthcare, and high-tech industries. Students will gain hands-on experience across the entire accelerator lifecycle, including design, manufacturing, operation, and maintenance, creating a comprehensive talent development ecosystem.
During the meeting, Magistrate Chung emphasized that healthcare and educational resources remain among Miaoli’s most pressing needs and are key priorities for the county government. He stated that with ongoing healthcare infrastructure improvements, combined with NYCU’s academic strengths and Heron’s expertise in radiation medicine and advanced research, Miaoli can simultaneously enhance both healthcare capacity and educational quality. He also pledged full support for the development of the NYCU Miaoli Campus, with the goal of creating a national-level demonstration hub integrating education, research, industry collaboration, and talent cultivation.
Regarding experimental education, Miaoli County Government Director of Education Hsin-Hui Yeh expressed support for NYCU’s proposed experimental high school program, targeting student enrollment beginning in Academic Year 2028. The initiative aims to strengthen educational opportunities locally, reduce talent outflow, and enable students to access world-class learning resources without leaving Miaoli.
The Miaoli County Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close collaboration with NYCU and accelerating campus development and educational planning efforts. Together, they aim to establish Miaoli as a key driver of innovation within the Greater Hsinchu-Miaoli Silicon Valley initiative, advancing education, healthcare, and technology industries while laying a strong foundation for future generations.
