 NYCU and Heron Neutron Sign MOU in Miaoli to Advance Medical Technology Park and BNCT Talent Development

 

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), under the witness of Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Heron Neutron Medical Corp. this afternoon at the Miaoli County Government. The partnership aims to promote the development of a Core Medical Industry Innovation Park and inject new momentum into Miaoli's industrial transformation. During the ceremony, Magistrate Chung also discussed plans for a future medical park and land development around the High-Speed Rail station, expressing his hope that collaboration among government, academia, and industry would create a brighter future and a more prosperous Miaoli.

 According to the Miaoli County Government, the county has been actively promoting the development of the advanced medical industry in recent years. This collaboration combines NYCU's academic strengths in medicine, engineering, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary research with Heron Neutron's expertise in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), particle accelerators, and advanced radiotherapy systems. Together, the partners aim to establish a platform for education and talent development, technology innovation, clinical translation, and industry collaboration.

 During the signing ceremony, Heron Neutron General Manager Hsiao-Lien Shen and NYCU President Chi-Hung Lin formally signed the agreement in the presence of Magistrate Chung. Chung expressed his appreciation to both NYCU and Heron for choosing Miaoli as the base for this collaboration. He noted that the initiative is expected to attract high-level medical technology talent, research capabilities, and industrial resources to Miaoli, helping the county become an important hub for advanced medical technology research, talent cultivation, and industrial development in Taiwan.

 Magistrate Chung stated that the signing carries significant synergistic value. By combining county-provided land resources with industry-academia collaboration, the project marks an important milestone in Miaoli's efforts to develop its advanced medical industry. Regarding the former Farglory Medical Park site, he explained that future development may proceed through public-private partnership models, allowing multiple organizations to utilize the land and maximize its value. He also noted that land directly in front of the High-Speed Rail station will be made available through public bidding, inviting interested organizations and investors to participate in transforming Houlong into a more prosperous region and creating greater benefits for society.

 President Lin thanked the county government for providing land resources. He explained that, in addition to integrating artificial intelligence into medical procedures and medical equipment, future efforts will focus on establishing core medical industry capabilities, including manufacturing and service provision. With Heron's existing expertise and capacity in this field, the Core Medical Industry Innovation Park is expected to serve as a base for both R&D and manufacturing while cultivating future talent to support the growth of Taiwan's medical technology industry.

 Heron Neutron Medical Corp. General Manager Leo Shen stated that the company has been actively promoting a “Made in Taiwan” initiative. BNCT is a large-scale cancer treatment system, and developing the talent needed to support its expansion into international markets is currently one of the company's highest priorities. Through its partnership with NYCU, Heron plans to establish a new accelerator manufacturing facility in Houlong in the future, helping to create a complete domestic medical technology supply chain.
